Tutorials
XTOP 2026 will offer a dedicated tutorial program on Monday, 21 September 2026, prior to the main scientific conference.
The tutorials are open to all conference participants, and researchers at every career stage are welcome. The program is designed especially to support PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and other early-career scientists by providing a coherent introduction to the principal scientific and methodological areas represented at XTOP 2026.
The tutorials will introduce fundamental concepts, terminology, and experimental approaches in high-resolution X-ray diffraction, scattering, microscopy, and imaging. Particular emphasis will be placed on the connections between the different fields covered by XTOP. The program is intended to establish a common scientific foundation, facilitate access to the full thematic breadth of the conference, and help participants place the contributions presented during the main program within a broader context.
The tutorials may also be valuable for experienced researchers interested in complementary techniques or in broadening their perspective beyond their own field of specialization.
Tutorial Topics and Speakers
- Coherent X-ray Imaging and Ptychography Techniques
- Vincent Favre-Nicolin, ESRF
- Phase-Contrast and Dark-Field Imaging
- Julia Herzen, LMU Munich
- X-ray Microscopy Techniques
- Julie Villanova, ESRF
- X-ray Diffraction Imaging Techniques
- Tobias Schülli, ESRF
- X-ray Scattering by Nanostructures
- Stefan Kowarik, University of Graz
Together, the five tutorials will provide an introduction to complementary diffraction-, scattering-, microscopy-, and imaging-based approaches and their applications in the structural characterization of materials.
Format and Schedule
Each tutorial is currently planned as a 45-minute presentation followed by 15 minutes for questions and discussion. Registration and a dinner for tutorial participants are planned for the evening of Sunday, 20 September 2026.
The final schedule and the order of the tutorials will be announced as part of the conference program.
Registration
Participation in the tutorials is optional and must be selected separately during conference registration.
Additional tutorial fee: EUR 100
Registration deadline: 20 August 2026
Tutorial registration includes the dinner on Sunday, as well as coffee breaks and lunch on Monday, 21 September 2026.
